The 34-year-old is now the overwhelming favorite after winning the Scottish Open a few days ago. Tiger Woods came close between the 2008 US Open and the 2019 Masters. Nevertheless, he has been waiting nine years and should not despair, as Henry Cotton, Julius Boros, Hale Irwin and Ben Crenshaw went 11 years between two majors. Rory also finished second at the US Open this year, losing to Wyndham Clark by one stroke.Ī fifth major has eluded him and therefore he has yet to join the ranks of 'the five' along with Seve, Koepka, Peter Thomson, Byron Nelson, John Henry Taylor and James Braid. McIlroy finished third, two strokes behind Cam Smith. The Northern Irishman, however, has come close to winning a major several times since then, including last year's Open Championship itself, which was eventually contested by the 'Camerons' (Smith and Young). On this occasion, the Spaniard will be absent although the American is on a roll, after winning his first golf tournament in the last four and a half years - the Rocket Mortgage Classic - and having climbed significantly in the world ranking to 22nd.
